On Monday, October 7, 2024, we're launching a new project: an online survey to gauge editors' and related professionals' real-life attitudes toward AI, actual usage of generative AI tools, and practical and ethical concerns.

Widespread availability of generative artificial intelligence (GAI, or AI) tools is relatively recent, beginning with the release of ChatGPT-3.5 in November 2022. As of Fall 2024, GAI has been, or is in the process of being, incorporated into the majority of writing and editing platforms.

The purpose of this project is to anonymously survey editors, proofreaders, authors, journalists, and related professionals on attitudes toward generative artificial intelligence, use of AI tools, and their practical and ethical concerns, if any. The plan is to collect and analyze this data annually over a three-year period.

Who is eligible to take the survey:

  • Copyeditors/line editors

  • Developmental/substantive editors

  • Translators

  • Authors

  • Copywriters

  • Journalists

  • Book/literary coaches

  • Proofreaders, indexers, and formatters

  • and related professionals whose work primarily involves editing, writing, and/or experimenting with text.

Results will be published online as a free downloadable PDF in December 2024 by Frushour AI Consulting & Editorial.

Survey design and data collection methodology have been reviewed by two independent sources for clarity and neutrality. Data is anonymized and will only be analyzed in aggregate. The 1,100 number quoted above is adequate to represent a population of 100,000 with 3% margin of error at a 95% confidence level.
